Monterey Family Resources:
A Monthly Column of Inexpensive Activities in Monterey County
By Ruth Paget

May-June

Carmel Valley
Carmel Valley hides many treasures for the family among its vineyards and resorts.

Right at the mouth of the Valley, you can walk an outdoor labyrinth in concrete that is modeled after the one built in 1220 at Chartres Cathedral in France. Labyrinths date from antiquity with their walkers using them as a tool for spiritual reflection.;

This particular labyrinth is part of the Community Church of the Monterey Peninsula located across from the Rancho Cañada Golf Course. When you turn in the driveway to go to the church, you will see a sign at the end of the road that points toward the golf course saying, “Play” and one toward the church saying, “Pray.” When church is not in session, there is a rose garden inside the church courtyard that offers nice photo opportunities.

After walking the labyrinth, you can take your family out to Garland Park where you can eat a picnic lunch and take a hike afterwards. However, the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District offers many reasonably priced outings such as those devoted butterflies, bats, mountain lions and deer, survivor skills, owls and other programs depending on the season. If you plan ahead, you can make it into a class. Check out the Parks website at www.mprpd.org or call (831)659-6065.

In Carmel Valley Village itself, the Carmel Valley Community Pool should enchant children and parents alike. The heated, outdoor pool set against the backdrop of mountains will make even the crankiest child brighten up. For information about day and season passes and teams, please call (831) 659 – 2606 beginning on Mother’s Day – May 11, 2008.

Have fun in CV!

Why not join or form a book club this summer? Mother-daughter book clubs, Spanish-language clubs, bilingual clubs, and teen clubs are among the many varieties that exist. You can avoid the cost of purchasing books and discussion guides by borrowing Book Club to Go bags from the Monterey County Free Libraries.
